RAD Data Communications was one of eleven Expert Consortium partners to share in a Golden Award from CELTIC, the EUREKA cluster and the only European R&D program in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) fully dedicated to end-to-end telecommunications solutions. The award was presented upon the completion of the TIGER (Together IP, GMPLS, and Ethernet Reconsidered) project.
Initiated in April 2006, the €4.7 million TIGER project was created to propose solutions to better adapt IP and Ethernet layers for the growing Metro Ethernet market, demonstrate the benefits of the proposed solutions through evaluation and benchmarking studies with regard to existing technologies and disseminate the solutions to the industry’s principal standardization bodies.
“TIGER was a very good case of efficient teamwork,” stated Dr. Yuri Gittik, Chief Strategy Officer at RAD Data Communications. “RAD actively participated in the project in particular focusing on the access segment in the network architecture, and specifically emphasizing requirements and functionality for business-centric and cellular backhauling services,” he noted. “It was an excellent opportunity to discuss future architectures and technologies in an expert forum and employ our ideas for next generation access.”
RAD was one of only three telecommunications vendors to have participated in the project. Apart from RAD, the Expert Consortium partners are Alcatel-Lucent France, France Telecom and the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Telecommunications (ENST) in France; Alcatel-Lucent Bell and the Interdisciplinary Institute for BroadBand Technology (IBBT) in Belgium; Nokia Siemens Networks in Germany and Israel; the Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH-ICS), Net Technologies and Virtual Trip Ltd. in Greece; and the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya (UPC) in Spain.
With the successful completion of the project, the eleven partners have already began their collaboration on TIGER II project, which will focus on the extension of TIGER technologies for metro-regional and core networks, and whether self-management capabilities are required to allow operators to benefit from full control plane capabilities and reduce operational expenditures.
CELTIC initiates and runs privately and public funded ICT/telecommunications R&D projects. It is supported by most of the major European players in communication technologies. Celtic projects are focusing at telecoms networks, applications and services looking at a complete system approach. The size of the CELTIC budget is in the range of €1 billion. CELTIC is open to any kind of project participants from all EUREKA countries.
