2/3G Mobile and DSLAM Backhaul over PSNs

Target Market

  • Converged fixed and mobile operators

RAD Products Included

  • IPmux-155L Hub-Site Pseudowire Access Gateway
  • IPmux-2L TDM Pseudowire Access Gateway
  • IPmux-4L TDM Pseudowire Access Gateway
  • ETX-102 Ethernet Demarcation Device

Summary description

The customer is a fixed and mobile operator that operates both 2G and 3G mobile networks and delivers business and residential services over DSL infrastructure

The operator's network is based on an MPLS core. A large number of central offices and colocation sites exist where aggregation devices can be accommodated, such as the BSC for the 2G network and RNC for the 3G. IP DSLAMs are colocated together with BTSs and NodeBs

RAD supplies a complete fiber optic solution that employs pseudowire technology to extend E1s for 2G BTSs while backhauling 3G NodeB and DSLAM traffic over an Ethernet uplink.

Main benefits

  • Simple and low cost
  • Flexible topology – applicable over dark fiber or an MPLS core
  • Supports both mobile backhaul and enterprise customers
  • Advanced clocking support for mobile backhaul over Ethernet/MPLS

Detailed description

The hybrid aggregation capabilities of IPmux-155L provide a complete backhaul solution. The IPmux-155 can aggregate up to 32 fiber optic links from remote sites. Terminates pseudowireencapsulated E1s and aggregates them for transmission over an STM-1 line to the BSC. Simultaneously, it concentrates and allocates traffic from an IP NodeB over Gigabit Ethernet to the RNC and IP DSLAM traffic to the MPLS core.

2G or 3G base stations and IP DSLAMs are colocated at remote sites. RAD is able to respond to any combination of colocated technologies. It offers both the ETX-102, a CPE without an E1 port, and the IPmux-2L/4L, which, in addition to Ethernet switching capabilities, provides pseudowire encapsulation of 2G traffic and forwards it to the BSC.

The IPmux-2/4L supports Stratum 2 clock recovery over E1 links, which is used for cellular applications. It provides 16 ppb clock accuracy, appropriate for 2G as well as 3G technologies.
